「父の日」というのは、「母の日」と比べると、どうも影が薄いようです。これは、日本だけの話ではなく、アメリカでも同様の傾向のようです。お父さんは、洋の東西を問わず、頑張っているんですけど・・・。
英語教室での Father's Dayは、自分のFatherだけでなく、grandfather、uncle、male-teacher、big-brother そして身近にいて自分を守ってくれるmen全員に、Loveを込めて Thank you！の気持ちを伝えるHolidayです。広い心で、さりげない心遣いと勇気をくれるFather達に、精一杯の感謝を表わし、respectの気持ちを伝えましょう。

Father's Dayが提案されたのは、Mother's Dayを設けようという動きがあったのと同じ頃です。１９０９年、WashingtonのSonora
Louise Smart Doddは、母の死後男手一つで６人の子供を育ててくれた（最後のひとりは生まれたばかりでした。）父親Henry Jackson Smartが、いかに自分を犠牲にして子供たちのために尽くしてくれたか、ということを大人になってから思い知り、父親の誕生日だったJune 19thを、Father's Dayにと提唱しました。
その後Father's
DayをHolidayにしようという動きは、のろのろと進みます。Mother's
Dayが、さっさと公式に認められたのに比べ、Father's
Dayの方は、男達の照れくささがあったのではないかと想像するのですが、Presidentもなかなか声明を出さないし、CommitteeもCongressも、ぐずぐずなかなか決めてくれません。

Presidential Proclamationが出るのは、１９６６年まで待たねばならなかったのです。そして、National Dayとして確立されたのは、１９７２年、あのPresident Richard Nixonの時です。Mother's Dayから遅れること６０年、アメリカ中できちんとFather's Dayが確立されてからまだ２７年しか経ってないのです。
Mother's Dayの花はcarnation、Father's Dayの花といえばroseです。carnationと同じで、colored rosesは今も生きて自分を慈しんでくれるFathersのために、white rosesは、今は既に亡きFathersを偲んで身に付け、飾る花です。
Mother's Dayの時のように、Dadに“World's Greatest Dad”、“Dad
＃１”といったCertificateをあげたり、Dadに休んでもらうためのCouponをpresentして、fatherの日頃の愛情と家庭への気配りに感謝します。日本と違って（？）、Americaのfatherは、家庭の仕事もきちんと分担し、子育てにも参加しますし、それが当然でもあり、なおかつ社会のmorality・discipline・justiceをしつけ、個人のcourage・decision・thoughtを導きます。これは、現代ではmotherにも自然な要求になっていますが、男性というより父性として、伝統的にfatherに頼る要素になっているようです。
